AAC is a compressed (and lossy) format. ALAC is a lossless format. ALAC is short for Apple Lossless Audio Codec. This format uses a loss- less audio compression scheme created by Apple. "alac" can decode some ALAC files; specifically, mono or stereo files that use a 16-bit sam- ple size. Presently, files that use more than two channels aren't supported. Basic commands of the form "alac file" decode a specified ALAC file and send the resulting data to the standard-output stream in WAV for- mat. For other modes, see the "man" page.
